Tonight I decided to check out the open Mic Night in Shrewsbury MA. I learned of tonight's event through the famous "Craigslist". Although I've known of it for a while now. Tonight's Geust Performer was non other than Luke McNiel (I hope I got that last name right). Luke was a regular performer at the open mics I used to host down in Hopedale.
So anyway I arrived on the early side and walked around a bit checking out the books. I was amused by some lively folks battleing some family issue out. It warmed my heart to see some interesting folk walking around (I felt like I was at home..HA HA). I wasn't to happy about some folks borrowing down in the corners of some areas of interest but oh well. I wasn't there to buy any books tonight anyway. So I made my way over to the cafe, made a quick introduction to the hosts and made my way to the women who condures up the lattes. I got myself a Carmel Tea Latte...mmm, Yum yum. A treat I don't normally partake in.
I sat myself down along amongst others whom some I believe were there for the music while some were just sampling or reading a book as if it were a public liabrary. Non the less they were there and that is the important thing. The mission? To introduce folks to acoustic music and lyrical work that they would have otherwise missed if sitting at home? Perhaps. Well in our world there are many missions and reasons why we perform.
The Hosts are a duo named "October Rose". ED and Louise Hezler. Ed plays the violin and Louise Guitar and vocals. Louise has a nice clear and beautifull folk voice. Her songs were unique to her experiences in life and rouses up mixed feelings and some interesting thoughts. She has this sommg called the "Rag Man" which was explained as a neat tune about a man who bought and sold Rags off a cart back in the days when she was much younger. An interesting tale for the family audience.
Luke McNeil...Not so Family oriented but on the other hand a very talented guitarist. His lyrics are beyond his years and possible beyond ours. A very truthfull and outspoken performance. His Brilliance is in his theatrical demeaner in performing how he feels. Meaning not just his great guitar work. He gets into the meaning of what he writes and conveys it in everyway possible. He lives it and breathes it. Exactly what every musician tries to transpire to.
Open Mic at Borders in Shrewsbury is every second thursday of each month (1 X per Month). A nice place to get out of your routine and check out some real musicians who just want to play and be heard.
Thanks for reading :)
